 Situational Judgement Tests (SJTs) are measurement methods that present applicants with job-related situations and possible responses to these situations.

Background
SJTs have a long history with the origins going back to Civil Service and Military examinations. In fact there are traces of SJT use during World War II. The “modern versions” of the SJT were first seen in the workplace during the 1990’s. Academic research into the strengths of SJTs shows criterion related validity and incremental validity above ability and personality assessments. SJTs have also less adverse impact towards minorities. As well as providing robust measures for employers, applicant reactions towards SJTs are very positive.

FindingPotential SJTs

We have developed a range of SJT’s focused on Graduates, Managers and people working in Retail roles, other generic versions are also in development. (If you would like to talk about development of further SJT’s or a bespoke version for your organisation please contact us). 

Our SJTs each contain 16 job related scenarios, each scenario requires the candidate to select how they would react, both most and least like them to the scenario. Completion time is approximately 10 minutes.

Being Dependable and Taking Accountability
Takes personal accountability for achieving goals, and seeing things through to completion. Delivers what they commit to and can be trusted to maintain standards and quality.

Leading the Way for Others
Creates a clear and compelling vision of the future, devolving accountability for its delivery to the right level whilst offering the necessary level of support. Drives performance through regular, honest feedback and by building a climate of trust and openness.

Embracing Change and Ambiguity
Challenges the status quo, producing new ideas and approaches to improve performance. Open to new ways of doing things and modifies their approach to meet changing demands. Comfortable working without clear guidelines and rules, taking initiative rather than waiting for direction.

Building Positive Working Alliances
Proactively builds a wide network of internal and external stakeholders. Encourages cooperation between different groups, whilst being comfortable expressing disagreement and handling conflict. Ensures the needs of key stakeholders are delivered.

Personal Development
Takes responsibility for their own development, setting clear goals in the process. Seeks out new development opportunities, learning from their successes and failures. Proactively asks others for their feedback.

Organisational Skills
Establishes clear priorities and builds plans to ensure delivery on time. Works in a systematic manner and manages resources efficiently. Quickly adapts plans as circumstances require. Sees things through to completion.

Collaborative Working
Looks to understand others' perspectives and objectives. Respects different styles/approaches, whilst adapting their own style to enable them to work effectively with others.

Decision Making
Ensures they understand the critical success factors, and assess a range of possible options, before making a decision. Steps back and seeks alternative perspectives when faced with unfamiliar scenarios. Willing to make decisions without access to all the information. Considers the implications of their decisions beyond the immediate issue.

Relating to Customers
Tries to understand customers' needs, checking that the customer is happy. Explains things in language that the customer can understand, remaining helpful when dealing with a challenging customer.

Taking Action
Thinks ahead and anticipates what needs doing, showing initiative to make sure it happens. Takes the action to make sure customers’ needs are met, taking decisions where they have the authority to do so.

Resilient
Stays calm when under pressure. Keeps going when things become difficult, staying focused when tired and under pressure. Keeps things in perspective when faced with setbacks.

Working in a Team
Gets on easily with people, respecting different styles and ways of working. Works with others to make sure goals are achieved, helping out when things get busy.
