Behaviours assessed — 5 priority competencies
1
Customer Focus
Builds effective customer relationships to ensure needs and expectations are understood. Understands the importance of the customer to the business, seeking regular feedback whilst being prepared to say no when needed.
Why this matters for Pharmacists: GPhC Standard 1 'Provide person-centred care' is first in the framework. Customer Focus captures understanding what each person needs, adapting care, and managing privacy and confidentiality (Standard 7).
2
Personal Leadership
Takes responsibility for their own actions. Proactively takes on additional responsibilities and drives their own performance. Lives their own values, actively acknowledges and seeks feedback from others.
Why this matters for Pharmacists: GPhC Standards 6, 8 and 9 form a triad: 'Behave in a professional manner', 'Speak up when they have concerns or when things go wrong', and 'Demonstrate leadership'. Personal Leadership captures the self-driven integrity, willingness to challenge, and ethical accountability that these standards demand.
3
Decision Making
Understands critical success factors and assesses a range of possible options before making a decision. Steps back and seeks alternative perspectives when faced with unfamiliar scenarios. Willing to make decisions without access to all the information. Considers the implications of their decisions beyond the immediate issue.
Why this matters for Pharmacists: GPhC Standard 5 'Use professional judgement' is central. Pharmacists make daily clinical judgements — about appropriateness of prescriptions, OTC advice, when to escalate, how to respond to ambiguous situations. Decision Making captures structured assessment under uncertainty.
4
Collaborative Working
Looks to understand others’ perspectives and objectives. Respects different styles/approaches, whilst adapting their own style to enable them to work effectively with others.
Why this matters for Pharmacists: GPhC Standard 2 'Work in partnership with others' and Standard 3 'Communicate effectively' both require coordination across the pharmacy team, with prescribers, and with other healthcare professionals. Collaborative Working captures this practical multi-disciplinary working.
5
Technical Capability
Has the necessary knowledge, skills and proficiency to conduct their role. Demonstrates mastery in their area of technical capability. Stays up to date with advances in their field and commits to their continuous development.
Why this matters for Pharmacists: GPhC Standard 4 'Maintain, develop and use their professional knowledge and skills' covers clinical and dispensing expertise. Technical Capability captures pharmaceutical knowledge, mastery of dispensing practice, and staying up to date with developments in medicines.
